Claremont Primary School has been designated by the National College for Teaching and Leadership as a Teaching School.
Teaching schools have an important role to play in a school-led system and in school improvement. Teaching schools will be centres of excellence, taking on a more focused role that prioritises:
- Co-ordinating and delivering high quality school-based initial teacher training (ITT). Currently our trainee provider is Kent Teach and Sussex (https://www.teachkentandsussex.org.uk/). In 2020-2021 we have 74 trainees across primary and secondary settings. Claremont Primary School provide 2 of the senior mentors for the programme and many of our teachers support training sessions as well as mentoring. In addition, Altius employ three other senior mentors.
- Providing high quality school-to-school support to spread excellent practice, particularly to schools that need it most. Over the past two years, we have supported 30 local schools with KS 2 maths through funding from the DfE. This year we are supporting up to 100 schools across Kent with the new DfE statutory roll out of Relationships and Health Education.
- Providing evidence-based professional and leadership development for teachers and leaders across their network. There are a wide variety of courses available through Altius Teaching School Network of which we are the lead primary teaching school. More information can be found at https://www.altiusteachingschool.co.uk/
In addition, teaching schools can play a role as brokerage hubs for other system leaders, co-ordinating the supply and activity of national leaders of education (NLEs) and specialist leaders of education (SLEs). They help prevent underperformance by supporting vulnerable schools, and where needed, help tackle underperformance in coasting schools and lead improvement in good schools.
