Be confident, be curious, be creative

English

First and foremost, we believe that English should be fun! English includes reading, writing, GPS, speaking and listening.

Lessons are inspired by the use of film, engaging texts (through the Power of Reading) and drama. Children have lots of opportunities to talk and work with others, as well as time to reflect upon and edit their writing, following feedback. Spelling and GPS (Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling), including the teaching of synthetic phonics through our Systematic Synthetic Phonics Program: Super Sonic Phonic Friends (DfE validated), are reinforced through activities and games and are carefully monitored across the school, alongside the reading and writing data.

We have a Phonics-matched reading scheme that supports children in their Early Reading from Reception upwards and then a staged reading scheme for children from Year 2 onwards. We have both fiction and non-fiction reading books (including a range of graphic novels), as well as poetry in all stages. The learning environment is used to support and enhance learning: working walls provide a point of reference and steps to success for independent learning. Displays around the school showcase work the children are proud of.
